’They tell me the new Datsun/2 does sporty things surprisingly well on all kinds of roads. So we pick a road that’s mostly rocks, sand and ruts, and under a broiling Mojave Desert sun get set to take off... literally!
The driver’s door swings wide and I slip into the bucket seat. It’s firm, supportive and adjusts easily to my height, so that my grip on the wheel is at 10 and 2 and comfortable. The dash is informative with a full array of gauges and the usual warning lights.
ZZZINNNGGGG! The 96HP SOHC up front winds up, revs free and settles to a jewelled hum. It’s warm and ready. The feeling’s mutual.
The Datsun scoots smoothly through the first three gears, spewing sand. Then eases up a compacted dune in fourth... a pleasant surprise reminding me of what automotive writers have said so well: “A tremendous power curve... best of any low priced car. It idles in low and accelerates smoothly in fourth from 8 miles an hour!”
Immediately apparent… the car’s nifty 4-speed and exceptional roadability. A hard cut on the sand and gravel... neutral steering, little body lean. The fully independent rear suspension hangs right in; rear wheels bite hard and stay near vertical.
Now, a little leap. Front wheels down first. The independent strut suspension soaks up the shock. No bottoming on four deep-cushion coil springs.
Whoops! Here comes the big one. We’re airborne. Hold the wheels straight and wait for touchdown. Wham! Four point landing. Like over the brow of the hill at Nurburg. Flying in a five passenger sedan!
Slam on the brakes. Straight and quick does it. Accelerate again and again 0-60 in 14 seconds. More panic, no-lockup stops. Still no fade, no sand in the 9.1" front discs. I’m convinced. Datsun/2 is sports car bred. Great brakes!
Time to look around. The visibility ... panoramic. Quick steering and a tight 31' turning circle mean even my mother-in-law could park it.
Flow-through fresh air vents at either end of the dash keep me comfortable with the windows up. There’s instant heat in the 3-speed heater/ defroster if I want it. Dual speed wipers and washers take care of mashed bugs. And, since we’re about 40 miles from a gas station, I’m pleased to see that the gas gauge hasn’t moved. Over 25 MPG under normal driving means over 20 with the red line revs I've been pushing.
One last slip, slide and slam through the cacti. No body rattles and I’m listening to the radio. Amazing.
I’m a little shook but the car looks wonderful. Under the dust flow fine lines… trim, functional, classy. I try the back seat leg room. No knocked knees. And a holler in the trunk makes a big echo. Room… this car’s got it. It is a five passenger sporty car… a lot of car for a little money!
